Birch

Inspired by my love of Elfquest comics and the Birch Tree

Birch is an Elf I created to bring together things I love, Elfquest comics and the Birch Tree.

Elfquest comics helped me find the joy of reading when I was younger,  With its beautiful art and imagery I was able to learn how to convert what I was reading to images in my minds eye.

As a child I always loved the Birch tree.  From its various colors of greens, grays, and whites, to its textures from course to soft suede.

This doll includes flecks of silver in her hair and a headband with a Birch leaf.  Her necklace pendant is a Birch tree seed pod.  Her dress, bloomers, and shoes incorporate the various textures of the Birch Tree.

Fox in Socks

Part of my Children's Books series

Picture

Franklin Willabee Fox loves the book Fox with Socks by Dr. Suess.

He has a special outfit so that he can look like the fox.
The hat ties on so it stays in place while playing, and the scarf hangs down his back for his bushy tail.

Everyday Heroes - Doctors

Doctors are Everyday Heroes!

They are there to listen to us and help us get better when we are not feeling well.

Some doctors specialize in an area to give special help when more knowledge is needed.

These Doctors were made for a friend to give as a gift the the husband and wife doctors that helped her through Breast Cancer and a Brain Tumor.

Thank you Doctors, you are Heroes !

Flamingo Girl

This little one is a mini-me for a friend that Loves Flamingos

Picture

Designing a doll can be a lot of fun.
Mimicking the colors and shapes of the animal gives me a challenge in how to adjust my primary patterns.

For the Flamingo I made her sleeves a little puffy to mimic the wings, and created big eyes and a beak for the tie hat.

Cotton Doll
This doll was made with Cotton yarn to be more friendly for a little ones sensitive skin.
This doll is a little smaller then the standard acrylic yarn doll.
Hook size was adjusted to accommodate the slightly lighter yarn weight.

The little human this doll is for has eczema, and was bald still at his first birthday.
This doll was designed with his comfort in mind with the cotton yarn.
Keeping with the mini-me version (like I made for his brother), his doll is bald like him when received.

We're Late!

What a silly little rabbit.

Creating an outfit for the White Rabbit was a fun challenge and he turned out perfectly.

Added a lapel watch and ascot.                    His tail fits perfectly through his coat.                  Hat on and ready to go, we're late!

Alice takes her Adventure into Wonderland

There is something Wonderful about Alice and her imagination.
Was it real or just a dream, does it matter?
Little cookie in her apron pocket.         Bloomers with ruffles and Mary Jane shoes.    Alice is always ready to think of new things.
I am a Bunny

Nicholas loves this book, he has the same name as the bunny too!
He loves to dress up just like the bunny in the book.

The Little Prince

This young Prince was a commission piece and an inspiration for a Children's Books series (stay tuned)

Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell

This doll is inspired by all the women who work hard toward their own passion in health care. Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first female Medical Doctor in the United States (1849), and founded the New York Infirmary for Women and Children (1857).

Dr. Blackwell is on display for the Exhibit "Art and Storytelling Event: Journeys in Health Care"
See more about the exhibit on the Curators Blog

NOTE:  Some dolls may be available for sale.  Please contact me with any questions.

Misty Copeland is the first African-American woman to become a Principal Dancer the American Ballet Theater.

I have been wanted to create her as a doll for some time and finally had the inspiration on how to create the tutu I wanted for her.
I did other pattern design modifications for the ballet shoes and tank top.

Neil Gaiman is an author of wonderful tales.  He has a whimsical and curious way that his character go through their adventure, but they are always a lesson in life to the one on the path.  Some of his wonderful books have also made it to the big screen, with one currently being produced as a series.  Get a taste of his world through his books or on screen.

American Gods - Book to series (Starz)
Neverwhere - BBC mini series to Book.
Stardust - Book to Movie
Coraline - Book to Movie
Mirror Mask - Book to Movie

  Melisandra - The Red Woman

Inspired from George R.R. Martin's HBO series, The Game of Thrones.

Here hair is burgundy with bright red highlights.  Parted in the center her thick hair can be styled in various ways.

Her outfit includes: long red dress with long flowing sleeves, along with red shoes and undies.
Her accessories are for the winter weather and are in the color burgundy, they include: a thick scarf, arm warmers (that give the look of and underdress), and leg warmers.

Melisandra was a fun doll to create, she gave me some challenges in getting her wardrobe the way that really showed off who she is.  Here are some of the phases of the creation:

I started with the scarf, and then formed the dress.   The first design as kimono sleeves just didn't work.
I undid the first sleeve design and designed a more gradual widening of the sleeves.

Potted Clovers !

It's a Mini-Me !
I think I will call her Maimai
Picture

Maimai will be joining me on her first adventure to the Ann Arbor Fiber Expo,  A time to find a wonderful selection of yarns and accessories, and visit with some of my fiber art friends.

The Fall show is the big one, with lots of goodies, but I never like to miss the Spring expo for some lucky finds.

Meet the Gorillaz !

I was inspired by the release of the new Gorillaz album Humanz.

This was a fun collection to make as I worked  with designing ears due to their hair styles, and adjusting my patterns for costumes.

Here are my versions of the virtual band members as crochet dolls:
Murdoc - his face is longer and thinner
2D - look at those big eyes
Noodle - Melancholy Hill outfit is fun
Russel - he loves his hats, and hogs.
